Whether you’re a Tesla owner looking to spice up your ride or are just intrigued by the world of wraps, our popular go-to guide answers your questions and opens up a realm of exciting possibilities.

What is a Wrap?

Wraps are adhesive-backed vinyl (polyvinyl chloride “PVC”) sheets that are carefully cut and applied to your vehicle’s exterior, directly over the paint. The vinyl sheets are about  0.08 inches (2mm) thick and have special properties that give it flexibility, color, adhesion and UV protection. High quality vinyl sheets have tiny channels to release air bubbles and promote a smooth application that won’t warp over time.

Wraps serve both as style enhancers and protective shields. With a wide array of colors, textures, and finishes, they offer Tesla owners the opportunity for a distinctive vehicle makeover.

Essentially, it’s like giving your car a fresh wardrobe without permanent paint changes.

Along with Tesla’s continuous updates,
change your wrap for a “new car” feel every few years!

Advantages of Using Wraps Over Traditional Paint

There are a few advantages that vinyl wraps have over a traditional paint job:

Extra Protection

Vinyl wraps act as a protective shield for your car’s original paint, safeguarding it from minor scratches, stone chips, and the harsh effects of sun exposure and extreme weather. To extend the life of your original paint and add to re-sale value, consider a removable color or clear wrap.

If you love your original paint color, consider protecting it with a clear wrap.

Customize Instead of Paying Extra for Paint Options

Vehicle manufacturers like Tesla charge $1000-2000 extra for certain (limited) color options. Wraps allow you to put your money toward a fully customized look with partial wraps starting at $300 and full wraps starting at $2000. Even if you prefer to re-paint your vehicle, costs are comparable to wraps but you won’t get the textures or customization you would from a wrap.

Choose a wrap instead of paying extra for limited paint colors.

Easy Maintenance

Vinyl wraps are known for their low maintenance, making them practical and convenient. Maintain the beauty of a wrapped Tesla with regular gentle cleaning and wax to keep it looking fresh. Expect most wraps to last 5-7 years or longer with proper maintenance.

Teslas are already low-maintenance – consider a wrap to make your whole EV worry-free.

Repair and Replacement

If a specific section of the wrap gets damaged, it can be repaired or replaced without the need for a complete redo, saving you both time and money.

Reversibility

Vinyl wraps are completely removable, giving you the flexibility to reveal the original, untouched factory finish beneath, providing you the freedom to change your vehicle’s look as you desire.

When it comes to wrap options, your imagination is the limit! A vinyl expert like Zach will help you decide on the right wrap for you.

The Tesla Wrap Process

An experienced wrap specialist is crucial to get the highest quality wrap that will last. Zach from Zach Wraps takes us step by step through the intricate Tesla wrap process so you know what to expect.

Step 1: Design and Consultation

Designing and applying a Tesla wrap requires meticulous planning. In this initial step, your wrap specialist will consult with you on your design goals.

Plan. Your wrap specialist will talk with you about your objectives, style preferences, and the desired final look of your Tesla. They may make suggestions, based on your personality, budget and condition of your vehicle.

EVPro Tips:

Minor scratches will likely not affect the final look of the wrap, but dents or deep scratches can appear more obvious once a wrap is applied. Your specialist should note pre-existing damage in the pre-install form and may take photos. (S)he may recommend repairing any damage before wrapping your vehicle.

If your Tesla doesn’t have its original OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) paint, your wrap specialist may not be able to guarantee that the paint will not be damaged if your wrap is removed in the future.

Ask about guarantees, warranties or what the process is if it you’re not happy with your post-wrap inspection.

Step 2: Material Selection

In this step, you and your specialist will choose the type of vinyl that matches your design and vision for your Tesla. If you haven’t already decided on the exact look and sheen you want, be prepared to choose from several options such as:

  • Glossy
  • Matte
  • Satin
  • Metallic
  • Carbon fibre

EVPro Tips:

Ask for a sample or swatch of the vinyl wrap(s) you are considering. Look at it indoors and outdoors and in different weather/sun conditions before making your final decision. It’s a bit like choosing paint colors for your home – designs and colors on a small swatch can look very different when they are on your vehicle.

Expect to leave your Tesla in the shop for 5-7 days and plan to use or rent another vehicle. When you drop off your car, activate Valet Mode to protect your privacy and settings.

Step 3: Preparing the Vehicle

Preparing your Tesla for the wrap is paramount to ensure your wrap will look flawless.

Here’s what to expect in this step:

Extreme Clean & Decontamination. All debris is removed from the vehicle using foam baths, clay bars and isopropyl alcohol. This process ensures the wrap will adhere flawlessly to the paint.

Drying Process. The vehicle is thoroughly dried with towels and blowers and left for at least 12 hours to ensure all moisture is removed from the surface and crevices.

Disassembly. Door handles, antenna, and bumpers are removed to ensure a tight fit of the wrap.

Step 4: Wrapping Technique

Vinyl wraps should be done indoors in temperatures around 60 degrees F (20 degrees C). Matching the temperature of the wrap and the vehicle helps to ensure the vinyl doesn’t become brittle or the adhesive isn’t too aggressive.

Measure the Vinyl. Experts carefully measure the vehicle to ensure enough vinyl is cut with extra allowances to align with every curve and corner of the vehicle. Experienced wrappers like Zach won’t cut corners to save money.

Double Check and Final Clean. Isopropyl alcohol is applied at this final preparatory step to ensure there is no debris before the vinyl is applied.

Remove Air. Technicians squeegee any air from between the vinyl and the vehicle’s surface to prevent air bubbles and creases.

Apply Vinyl. The wrap is carefully applied, stretched and smoothed into shape by hand.

Trim. Once the vinyl is applied, excess material is trimmed for a perfect fit.

Tuck and Seal. A heat gun is used to seal the vinyl to the surface which is vital to prevent peeling. Careful attention is paid to seal all corners.

Step 5: Post-Wrap Inspection

Your wrap specialist will examine your vehicle to ensure it meets the highest standards. Regardless, here are a few tips to help you inspect your newly wrapped Tesla when you pick it up:

  • Walk around the vehicle slowly in a full 360 degree circle check
  • The vinyl should be completely adhered to vehicle without lifting, looseness or air bubbles
  • Look for bubbles, creases, bevelled or sharp edges
  • Check for debris or dirt under the wrap
  • Move close to and then far away from your vehicle, as imperfections can show up from certain distances
  • Pay particular attention to high-use areas like door handles, mirrors, around cameras and under bumpers. Your wrap specialist may use a dry erase marker to circle areas that may need to be addressed
  • Gently press your finger onto different areas of the wrap. You should notice some elasticity without leaving any indents

Cost of Wrapping your Tesla

The average price of wrapping your Tesla typically ranges from $2,000 to $5,000 USD and depends on the type of wrap and whether you are doing a partial or full wrap. The overall cost may increase if you need to repair large dents or scratches before your wrap is applied. Intricate patterns or custom graphics can also affect the total cost.

Although labor costs are a large part of the overall price, we don’t recommend wrapping as a DIY project.

For those who are budget-conscious, here are some useful tips:

  • opt for a standard vinyl wrap
  • keep the design simple
  • consider a partial wrap

The return on investment (ROI) for Tesla wraps can be substantial. They not only protect the original paint finish, potentially boosting resale value but also keep your vehicle looking immaculate, ensuring a better return when it’s time to sell.

Maintenance Tips for Tesla Wraps

Your newly wrapped Tesla looks incredible! Here’s how to keep it looking great:

Cleaning and Care

Wash your Tesla preferably by hand using a mild detergent, warm water, and a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive materials or high-pressure washers that can potentially damage the wrap’s surface.

Protect the Wrap

To extend the life of your Tesla wrap, limit its exposure to bright sunlight and harsh weather conditions. Park in shaded areas, avoid harsh chemicals and apply a wax regularly.

Deal with Damage or Wear

Minor tears or scratches can be addressed with vinyl patch kits or by seeking professional assistance. It’s crucial to deal with these issues promptly to prevent them from worsening. If your wrap displays extensive wear, fading, or severe damage, it may be time to consider a replacement.

Consult with a professional to determine the most suitable course of action. Consistent maintenance and swift repairs can significantly extend the lifespan of your Tesla wrap.

FAQ

How long does it take to wrap a vehicle?

A wrap specialist can typically wrap your vehicle in 5-7 days. Larger vehicles like the Tesla cyber truck could take longer.

How long does a vinyl wrap last?

Vinyl wraps can last 5-7 years with proper maintenance. Maximize the life of your wrap with regular gentle washing and waxing. Avoid intense sunlight and harsh weather conditions. Since many Tesla owners keep their vehicle for years or decades, many people choose to re-wrap their vehicles every 5-7 years for a “new vehicle” refresh.

Can I wrap an older Tesla vehicle?

Experts advise wrapping a vehicle within five years of purchase as aging paint increases the risk for damage or peeling when wraps are removed. Most Tesla owners wrap their vehicle shortly after purchasing it so the underlying paint remains pristine and undamaged.

Can I wrap a Tesla that’s been re-painted?

Avoid wrapping re-painted vehicles, as vinyl adheres best to original high quality factory (OEM) paint. Your certified wrap specialist can determine the quality of your vehicle’s paint and advise.

Does Tesla do vehicle wraps?

Tesla offers a limited number of clear and color wet-apply film wraps for 2023 (newer) vehicles. Tesla describes their process as a wet-apply paint film, which is different from traditional vinyl sheet wraps. Tesla does not offer traditional vinyl wraps or wrap removal service at this time.
